Tassos Papadopoulos elected President of the Republic of Cyprus

Tassos Papadopoulos was elected President of the Republic of Cyprus on 16 February 2003. Papadopoulos assumed the Presidency after winning a first round majority with 51.51% of the vote. He succeeded the President of the previous ten years, Glafcos Clerides. Before the 2004 Annan Plan Referendum he urged Greek Cypriots to vote No, declaring "I received a state. I will not deliver a community".

Cyprus News Agency founded on the initiative of Andreas Christofides

The Cyprus News Agency (CNA) was officially founded on 16 February 1976 following an initiative by the Director-General of the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation, Andreas Christofides, who highlighted the need for a national news agency in Cyprus.

 

1965

Ihsan Ali calls on the United Nations

In a letter dated 16 February 1965 to the UN Secretary-General U Thant, Turkish Cypriot politician Ihsan Ali stressed that only when external interventions ceased would peace and prosperity prevail in the country.

Ihsan Ali (1904–1978) was a Turkish Cypriot doctor who developed significant activity in support of the peaceful coexistence of the two communities (Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots) in Cyprus.

1964

Georgios Papandreou wins Greek elections 

In the elections of 16 February 1964, the Centre Union won with 52.8% of the vote and 171 seats, and Georgios Papandreou formed a government as Prime Minister.

1936

Limassol Carnival enters the city for the first time with King Carnival

The first float of King Carnival appeared in the Apokries parade of 16 February 1936 in Limassol, designed and constructed by the Atelier, the artistic workshop of Victor Ioannides and Giorgos Fasouliotis.

 

1926

Tithe tax abolished by the Legislative Council

On 16 February 1926, the Legislative Council, on the initiative and decision of the British Governor Malcolm Stevenson, abolished the tithe tax, which had been in force since the Frankish period.

The tax applied to all forms of agricultural and livestock production, equal to 10% of the value of total gross output, and was collected either in kind or in money.
