Netflix has revealed new details about the fifth season of Bridgerton, confirming that the story will centre on Francesca Bridgerton, played by Hannah Dodd.

Each season of the series follows the romantic journey of a different member of the Bridgerton family. In the new instalment, the spotlight turns to Francesca, one of the more reserved and introspective siblings.

Her storyline will follow a developing relationship with Michaela, the cousin of Lord Kilmartin, played by Masali Baduza. A teaser released by Netflix shows the two characters sharing an intimate moment as they touch hands.

The pairing will mark the first time a same-sex relationship becomes the central romance of the show. While queer characters have appeared in the series before, their stories had not previously been the main focus of a season.

Francesca’s storyline continues from earlier seasons. She was introduced as one of the Queen’s chosen debutantes in season three and later married John Stirling, the Earl of Kilmartin, played by Victor Alli. In the latest season, her husband dies, and the new chapter begins two years later as Francesca returns to society and considers marriage again.

The television series is based on the bestselling Bridgerton novels by Julia Quinn. The storyline of Francesca draws inspiration from Quinn’s sixth book, When He Was Wicked.

Quinn has previously described Francesca as one of the most emotionally complex members of the Bridgerton family. Readers have often pointed out that the character displays traits associated with autism, including her quieter nature, sensitivity to social settings and preference for calm over the intensity of London’s social season.

Actor Hannah Dodd also commented on the importance of the storyline, noting that queer love stories have traditionally been excluded from many period dramas.

She said that queer people have always existed and deserve to see their stories reflected in historical settings and romantic narratives.

The new season will explore themes of grief, identity and unexpected love, continuing the series’ tradition of placing romance at the centre of its storytelling.
