The Limassol District Court has issued the first conviction in the Republic of Cyprus for offences involving child sexual abuse material generated through artificial intelligence. The ruling, delivered last week following an admission of guilt, concerns two young individuals convicted of offences related to the use of AI in the production of such material.
Court highlights seriousness of emerging offences
In its decision, the Court stressed the gravity of these offences, noting a worrying increase and describing them as an unprecedented scourge.
“The courts, as guardians of legality and order, must safeguard and ensure the proper application of the law […] in the interest of society,” the ruling states.
The Court further noted that the defendants “chose to act against individuals who appear never to have harmed or provoked them in any way to justify such shameless behaviour,” adding that their conduct “can only be described as, at the very least, unacceptable, antisocial and highly selfish,” which was considered an aggravating factor in determining criminal liability.
Suspended sentences and rehabilitation focus
The defendants were handed suspended prison sentences, taking into account their young age. The Court also issued additional orders aimed at supporting their rehabilitation, stating that these measures were intended to “facilitate the achievement of reform and contribute to that direction”.
No further details of the case can be made public, as proceedings were conducted behind closed doors due to the nature of the offences. The case was prosecuted on behalf of the Attorney General of the Republic by state lawyer Nadia Koliarou.
