Police told 'Politis' radio on 107.6 and 97.6 that they have launched an independent investigation in connection with allegations of domestic violence against a mayor's wife, as reports made the rounds on social media yesterday, prompting authorities into a number of early reaction steps.

They are also looking into leaks of sensitive personal documents, as police press office spokesperson Christodoulos Konsolos told Politis.

'We are in the process of data gathering and evaluation in connection with the alleged beating of a mayor's wife,' Konsolos added, with the purpose of establishing possible criminal responsibility and setting up for what comes next in the ongoing investigation.

Responding to the reports, the wife of Paphos Mayor Phedonas Phedonos, Louisa Andreou, refuted domestic violence allegations in a Facebook post, saying that 'I am not a victim and I have no fear', adding that this was coordinated and politically motivated.

'I have not accused my husband of beating me, he is a decent man,' she noted, expressing regret that she had been forced into a public response in order to protect her family from 'malicious gossip'.

According to the process, following police evaluation, the case will be submitted to the Attorney General's Office for an opinion on how to proceed next.
