The first snowfall of the season has been recorded in Cyprus, confirming earlier forecasts by the Meteorological Service that tonight would be the coldest night of the winter to date.

According to the Department of Meteorology, temperatures are expected to fall to around 7°C inland this evening, while the long-anticipated snowfall in the mountainous areas has now become a reality. As reported by Kitas Weather, live snowfall has been observed, with a light dusting expected and snowflakes possibly visible at elevations as low as 1,400 metres.

A weak low-pressure system is currently affecting the area, while a high-pressure system is expected to move in from tomorrow.

Tonight’s weather will be partly cloudy, with isolated rain expected and, at the highest peaks of Troodos, snow or sleet. Winds will blow from the northwest to northeast, light to moderate inland at 3 to 4 Beaufort, and moderate to strong along the coast at 4 to 5 Beaufort. The sea will be slightly rough to rough.

Temperatures will drop to around 7°C inland, approximately 10°C along the coast, and close to 2°C in the highest mountainous areas, where local frost is expected to form.
