With the festive season approaching, the British Bases Police (SBP) have announced intensified road patrols over the coming weeks, aiming to ensure road safety across areas under their jurisdiction, both in the eastern and western parts of the island.
In a statement, the SBP informed drivers that policing levels will be increased during this period. Deputy Assistant Chief Constable of Dhekelia, Markos Petrou, underlined that the primary objective is public safety, not limiting people’s enjoyment of the holidays.
Petrou urged the public to exercise caution on the roads and to ensure they return home safely. He noted that, with numerous festive events expected and alcohol consumption likely, everyone must act responsibly, either by appointing a designated sober driver or by using taxi services.
Recalling that driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs can lead to serious injuries or even loss of life, he stressed that such behaviour will not be tolerated. Those found breaking the law, he warned, will be prosecuted with the full severity permitted.
At the same time, Petrou highlighted the importance of securing homes during the Christmas period, pointing out that the holidays often present increased opportunities for burglaries.
