The Police have issued a clarifying statement regarding driver behaviour at intersections monitored by traffic cameras when emergency vehicles approach.
The clarification was deemed necessary after it was observed that several drivers hesitate to give way to ambulances, fearing that an out-of-court fine may be issued.
Absolute priority for emergency vehicles
According to the Police, the swift passage of ambulances is an absolute priority, as any delay may threaten human lives. For this reason, drivers are allowed to move forward even when the traffic light is red, provided this is done to facilitate an emergency vehicle that has its flashing lights and siren activated.
What applies in camera-controlled intersections
The Police make it clear that in such cases no out-of-court fines are issued. In parallel, the contractor managing the traffic camera system has been instructed to review all relevant footage and not forward violations resulting from actions taken to facilitate ambulances, fire engines or police vehicles.
Procedure for cancelling a fine
If a citizen receives an out-of-court fine despite having given priority to an emergency vehicle, the Police advise them to contact the contractor company at 80008009, during working days and hours.
The fine will be cancelled promptly, following a relevant review by the Headquarters Traffic Department.
Call for responsibility
In closing, the Police call on drivers to show understanding and responsibility, stressing that “every second can determine a human life.” Public cooperation is considered essential to ensuring that assistance reaches those who need it in time.
