UN peacekeeping force says Turkish Cypriot security personnel entered the UN-controlled buffer zone without authorisation.

The United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) has increased patrols and maintained a visible presence in Pyla after observing what it described as an unauthorised entry by Turkish Cypriot security personnel into the United Nations buffer zone.

In a post on X, UNFICYP said that any unauthorised entry, presence or activity within the buffer zone constitutes a violation of the Mission’s mandate.

Efforts to restore the status quo

The peacekeeping force said respect for its mandate is essential to maintaining stability in the sensitive area around Pyla.

UNFICYP added that it is engaging with all relevant parties in an effort to restore the status quo ante and prevent actions that could undermine calm and stability in the area.

Stability remains the priority

The Mission stressed that maintaining calm and stability across the buffer zone remains its highest priority.
