George Vassiliou Lies in State, Condolence Book to Open

The condolence book will open at the Presidential Palace, with the President of the Republic and Cabinet members signing in the morning.

The body of former President of the Republic George Vassiliou will lie in state today at the Church of Ayia Sofia (Tou Theou Sofias) in Strovolos, from 10:00 to 17:00.

A condolence book will also open today following the passing of the former President. The book will be placed in the events hall of the Presidential Palace, where it will first be signed in the morning by the President of the Republic of Cyprus and members of the Council of Ministers.

The condolence book will be open to state officials from 10:30 until noon, and to members of the diplomatic corps from noon until 15:00. In addition, condolence books will be opened at all diplomatic missions of the Republic of Cyprus abroad.

The President of the Republic and the full Cabinet will attend the funeral, which will be held at public expense on Saturday, 17 January, at 13:00, at the Church of Ayia Sofia in Strovolos. The family will receive condolences at the church from 11:30.

Burial will take place at the Aglantzia Municipal Cemetery.

The day of the funeral, Saturday, 17 January, has been declared a public holiday.
