Radio Caroline admitted the error after an announcement was aired claiming that the King had passed away. The station, which broadcasts across southern England and the Midlands, followed the protocol for such an announcement, playing “God Save the King” and observing 15 minutes of silence.
Error attributed to computer malfunction
After apologising for the confusion, the station said the announcement had been triggered by a computer error.
Station director Peter Moore wrote on Facebook:
“Due to a fault in the computer system at our main studio, the ‘Death of a Monarch’ procedure, which all UK broadcasters keep ready, hoping it will never be needed, was mistakenly activated on Tuesday afternoon (19 May), incorrectly announcing that the King had died.”
Formal apology
“The station had the honour of broadcasting the Christmas message of Her Majesty the Queen, and now of the King, and we hope to continue doing so for many years,” he added. “We apologise to His Majesty the King and to our listeners for any distress caused.”
