Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has defended the continuation of direct talks with Israel, saying it is his duty to find a way to end Israeli military operations in Lebanon.

Speaking to local agricultural union leaders, Aoun said Lebanon’s position in the negotiations was clear and limited to specific demands.

“The framework set by Lebanon for the negotiations includes the withdrawal of Israeli forces, a ceasefire, the deployment of the army along the border, the return of displaced people and the provision of economic or financial assistance to Lebanon,” Aoun said, according to his office. “Anything else being discussed is incorrect.”

“It is my duty, stemming from my position and responsibility, to achieve the impossible and whatever comes at the lowest cost in order to stop the war against Lebanon and its people,” he added.

Aoun said Lebanon had already paid a heavy price for conflict. “We have lived through wars and seen where they led Lebanon. Is there anyone who can bear their cost afterwards?” he said.

Last week, the US and Lebanese ambassadors in Washington completed a third round of direct talks, after which Lebanon’s fragile ceasefire was extended for another 45 days.
