Strike hit residential building in Gaza City amid ceasefire concerns

The Israeli Air Force targeted Hamas leader in Gaza Izz al‑Din Haddad in an airstrike on Friday, according to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz.

The strike hit a residential building in the Rimal district of Gaza City, according to Palestinian media.

It is not immediately clear whether Haddad was killed in what could be seen as a breach of the ceasefire. Israel has previously justified such strikes by claiming the targets posed an active threat to its forces.

In a joint statement, Netanyahu and Katz said they had ordered Haddad’s killing, describing him as the commander of Hamas’s military wing and “one of the architects of the October 7 massacre.”

They added that Haddad was responsible for the killing, abduction and mistreatment of thousands of Israeli civilians and soldiers, held hostages in harsh captivity and directed attacks against Israeli forces, while refusing to implement a US‑backed agreement to dismantle Hamas’s weapons and demilitarise Gaza.

“The IDF and Shin Bet are fully implementing the government’s policy not to tolerate threats and to proactively neutralise our enemies,” the statement said.

“This is a clear message to all those who seek our lives: sooner or later, Israel will reach you,” it added.
