US President Donald Trump published a map on Truth Social depicting Venezuela in the colours of the US flag and bearing the caption “51st state”, one day after his acting counterpart in Caracas, Delcy Rodríguez, stressed that her country “would never consider” becoming part of US territory.
The Republican tycoon often boasts that he has full control over the Latin American state following the bloody US military operation that led to the arrest of Nicolás Maduro on 3 January.
The US president, who has repeatedly said he would like Canada to become “the 51st state” of the United States, is now turning his attention to Venezuela.
In March, on the occasion of a baseball game, he referred to the possibility. “Nice things are happening in Venezuela lately (…) 51st state, anyone?” he wrote on Truth Social.
Acting President Rodríguez rejected such a scenario on Monday, saying that “we would never consider it” because “we love our independence, our heroes and our heroines”.
She nevertheless reiterated that her government is promoting a “diplomatic agenda of cooperation” with the United States, following the restoration of bilateral relations between Caracas and Washington in March, seven years after they were severed by Nicolás Maduro.
