Alert at ELDYK after Meningitis Case

A soldier is in intensive care, while two more individuals are under medical observation with mild symptoms

A soldier at the Hellenic Force in Cyprus (ELDYK) is being treated in an intensive care unit after being diagnosed with meningitis, while two other individuals remain under medical observation for precautionary reasons, showing mild symptoms.

Speaking to Politis, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence, Christos Pieris, said that health services responded immediately by implementing all required protocols in order to limit any risk of spread and manage the incident from the outset.

He added that, according to the treating doctors, the young soldier is currently without fever and is expected to be extubated on Friday, barring any complications.

As he explained, the identification and tracing of the soldier’s close contacts has already been completed. These individuals have been informed and placed under preventive monitoring, with recommendations to use protective masks, while additional protective measures have also been taken.

At the same time, Mr Pieris noted that the relevant services have carried out disinfection of the affected areas using the appropriate health measures, while the location where the case was identified has been isolated as part of precautionary actions.
