Express Rain and Strong Winds Bring Mid-May Chill to Cyprus

Showers, isolated storms and possible hail are expected to continue in parts of the island through Sunday’s parliamentary elections.

 

Rain returned to several areas of Cyprus on Wednesday, confirming forecasts issued in recent days by the Department of Meteorology.

Heavy rain and strong winds were reported from midday in the Troodos area, Larnaca district and the free Famagusta district.

According to the Department of Meteorology, the weather on Wednesday afternoon will be partly cloudy, with local showers or a storm mainly in the mountains, inland areas and the east. Hail may fall during storms.

Winds will blow from the south-west to north-west, strong to very strong, at 5 to 6 Beaufort, and temporarily up to near gale force, 6 to 7 Beaufort, on the southern coast. The sea will be rough.

Tonight, increased cloud in the west may bring isolated showers. Winds will ease to light to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort, and up to strong, 5 Beaufort, on the coast. Temperatures will fall to 14C inland, around 16C on the coast and 9C in the higher mountains.

On Thursday, the weather will remain partly cloudy, with isolated showers or a storm mainly after midday in the mountains and the south-east. Hail is not ruled out during storms. Temperatures will rise to 28C inland, around 26C on the southern and eastern coasts, around 23C on the western and northern coasts, and 18C in the higher mountains.

On Friday and Saturday, intervals of cloud are expected, with local showers and isolated storms mainly after midday in the mountains, inland areas and the east.

Election Sunday forecast

On Sunday, when parliamentary elections are being held, isolated showers are expected, while a storm cannot be ruled out. Hail is also possible during storms.

Temperatures on Friday will remain at Thursday’s levels. On Saturday, they are expected to fall inland and in the mountains, while no significant change is forecast on the coast. Temperatures will continue to remain below the seasonal average.
