Akel Famagusta has called for a review of the location of the National Guard's "Modestos Panteli" camp in Liopetri through a letter addressed to Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas.
The intervention is based on concerns expressed by the local community over the fact that the camp and its military storage facilities are situated within the residential area, in immediate proximity to Liopetri A' Primary School and inhabited neighbourhoods.
In its letter to the minister, Akel requests official information on the assessment studies that have been conducted, the safety measures currently in place in the area and whether the relocation of the military facilities outside the residential zone is being considered.
The party clarifies that its intervention is not directed against the National Guard and does not question its role in the defence of the country.
"The intervention focuses on the need to safeguard human life, and particularly the safety of young children and residents, which must be the highest priority.
"Akel Famagusta awaits the official response of the Defence Ministry on the matter and declares that it will continue to monitor the issue with the utmost responsibility," the letter states.
Liopetri A' Primary School predates the construction of the camp. However, subsequent residential development in the area was so extensive that the military installation now finds itself at the centre of a fully developed residential zone.
