The European Commission has approved €9.2 million in assistance to Cyprus from the EU Solidarity Fund, marking the largest amount ever granted to the country under the scheme.
The funding is intended to address the impact of drought, extreme temperatures and the devastating wildfires that affected the Limassol and Paphos districts in July 2025.
Government satisfaction
In a written statement, Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna described the decision as a significant milestone and a clear expression of European solidarity.
The application for support was submitted on 14 October 2025 following coordinated efforts by the government, in line with EU regulations. Approval follows an earlier advance payment of €2.3 million granted in December 2025.
Support measures
From the outset of the crisis, the government moved to submit a documented request while also implementing support measures for affected households, businesses, workers and communities. These included reconstruction efforts and environmental restoration initiatives.
Raouna noted that the preparation of the application involved coordination across multiple ministries, including finance, agriculture, interior, health, defence and transport, as well as the Deputy Ministry of Culture.
Next steps
The process now moves to its final stage, with the EU Council and European Parliament expected to formally approve the funding through the budgetary procedure following a Commission proposal later this summer.
