Two boats sank and were destroyed off Cape Greco on Saturday as severe weather battered Cyprus, while a third vessel was also encountering difficulties in the area.
According to police, authorities initially received information about a vessel at risk of sinking in the bay between Agioi Anargyroi and Konnos at Cape Greco.
Police officers were dispatched to the scene and helped the boat's operator reach shore safely.
The vessel subsequently struck rocks amid rough sea conditions and sank.
Police said two additional boats were anchored in the area, while rescue efforts were under way by the Air Operations Unit helicopter to evacuate those on board.
At the time of writing, police told Politis that two vessels had sank while three people had been rescued - two from one vessel, and one from another. A helicopter from the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) was still at the scene.
It was not clear whether the rescue operation at this point involved extracting more people from the area or removing the third vessel from danger or both.
A JRCC representative said they could not divulge any information while the mission was ongoing.
Severe weather blamed for sinkings
Photographs published by Kitas Weather show the extent of the damage caused by the incident.
According to the weather monitoring group, the destruction of the two vessels was the result of the severe weather affecting Cyprus on Saturday.
In an earlier post regarding the first vessel, Kitas Weather said: "Fortunately, everyone who was on the boat was rescued."
The group later published additional photographs showing a second vessel that had also sunk and been destroyed.
Authorities have not yet released further details regarding the incident.
The sinkings occurred as thunderstorms, strong winds and rough sea conditions affected several parts of Cyprus under an orange weather warning.
