The condition of a soldier being treated for confirmed meningitis at Nicosia General Hospital remains stable, while precautionary restrictions will remain in place at his military unit for the next seven days, Defence Ministry spokesperson Christos Pieris said.
Pieris said efforts were expected to be made later today to extubate the patient, who is likely to require a few more days of hospital care outside the intensive care unit. His clinical condition is described as stable.
One more soldier in hospital
According to Pieris, three cases in total are being monitored as a precaution. One of them was admitted to hospital on Thursday afternoon, but none of the three has shown symptoms of meningitis.
He clarified that their monitoring is being carried out purely as a preventive measure, with no indication that they are connected to the same disease.
Asked about the risk of transmission, Pieris said all relevant health protocols are being followed. He noted that meningitis can be transmitted through droplets and close contact.
For the next seven days, restrictions on leave, movements and staff gatherings will apply at the unit, following instructions from the infectious diseases centre, as part of efforts to prevent and control any possible spread.
Pieris added that hygiene and disinfection measures have already been taken across the unit, with spraying carried out from the outset.
