Veterinary Services have confirmed a positive case of foot‑and‑mouth disease in a herd of 66 sheep and goats in Pachna, Limassol, according to an announcement issued on Tuesday evening. The culling of animals at the unit has already begun.
According to the statement, the case was identified late in the afternoon as part of nationwide sampling being carried out to assess epidemiological data.
“Upon informing the person responsible for the unit, the Veterinary Services immediately implemented the necessary isolation and containment measures through appropriate control points,” the announcement states. Control and surveillance zones with a radius of three and ten kilometres respectively have been established around the unit.
The farm had completed its second round of vaccinations and is not located in close proximity to other livestock units, it is noted. The second vaccination dose has been completed in Limassol district for both small ruminants and cattle.
“The Veterinary Services are working tirelessly to investigate the new incident and assess updated epidemiological data,” the statement adds.
The public will be kept informed of developments, while it is noted that sampling is being carried out across Cyprus, with results being processed continuously throughout the day, seven days a week, until late in the evening.
