The long‑awaited moment has arrived for residents of the Ayios Yiannis neighbourhood in Larnaca, as today at 7:30 pm contracts will be signed for the area’s redevelopment

After delays lasting almost ten years, the project for the regeneration of the neglected parish of Ayios Yiannis is now moving into the implementation phase. It is indicative that planning procedures for the project began in 2017, but delays linked to sewerage works and, above all, the discovery of archaeological finds beneath road surfaces set the redevelopment back by several years.

The Municipality of Larnaca has already allocated funding of €3,150,000 in its 2026 development budget ahead of the start of construction works. Today, 18 May, the construction contract will be signed between the Municipality of Larnaca and the successful bidder, contractor Miltiadis Neophytou, during a ceremony at 7:30 pm in the courtyard of the Church of Agios Ioannis the Theologian. The architectural plans will also be presented during the event. Works are expected to begin in the summer or, at the latest, by early autumn.

The design provides for the creation of a central square and open public spaces, reconstruction of road surfaces and pavements in adjacent streets, enrichment of green areas with new tree planting and the creation of new parking spaces for residents and visitors. It is recalled that on 25 September 2025 the Municipality of Larnaca announced the tender for the project, outlining four main interventions: pavement widening, installation of modern urban equipment, upgrading of lighting and road signage, and improved safety for pedestrians, cyclists and persons with disabilities.

As announced, high‑quality materials such as granite, concrete paving blocks and natural stone will be used. Particular emphasis will be placed on preserving and highlighting the traditional character of the area, strengthening urban greenery and improving the microclimate and sustainable mobility.

A key objective from the outset of the project has also been to create a landmark and social gathering point for the local community, an idea proposed by residents themselves through a public consultation process.
