Concerns raised over lack of access to basic banking services, particularly affecting elderly residents

Municipal councillor of the Municipality of Akamas, Savvas Theodosiou, has raised the need for the immediate installation of an ATM in Peyia.

Banks are increasingly shifting towards digital services to reduce costs and provide access through apps and internet banking, but this is creating serious problems, particularly for elderly people, Theodosiou said.

He pointed out that all bank branches in the Municipality of Akamas have closed and ATMs have also been removed, causing significant hardship for residents who must travel long distances even for basic transactions.

Theodosiou added that many elderly residents are not familiar with smartphones, banking applications or electronic payments, forcing them to rely on children, relatives or neighbours for withdrawals and payments, which reduces their independence.

He called on the relevant authorities to act swiftly to install an ATM in Peyia and ensure at least one bank branch is available to provide essential services to a large number of communities in the area.
