The contracts aim to reduce drinking water losses and improve the reliability of the supply network, with more than 3,000 faults expected to be repaired.

The Famagusta District Local Government Organisation signed contracts on Thursday for repair works on the water supply network in the municipalities of Paralimni-Deryneia and Ayia Napa. The contracts cover excavation, reinstatement and related works on roads and pavements, as part of efforts to repair faults in the organisation’s water supply network.

According to an announcement by the organisation, each contract is worth €972,850 plus VAT. The works will run for 24 months or until the contract amount is exhausted. Both contracts have been awarded to L&L Earthworks Contractors Ltd. The aim is to tackle drinking water losses and improve the reliability of the water supply network across the Famagusta district. It is estimated that more than 3,000 faults will be repaired through the two contracts.

The contracts were signed by the President of the Famagusta District Local Government Organisation, Yiannis Karousos, and the representative of the contracting company, Lambros Lambrou, in the presence of board members, the general director, the management team and staff of the organisation. Karousos said water losses in the organisation’s network currently stand at around 36%, a particularly high rate which affects both proper water management and the organisation’s operating costs.

“Through these contracts, we are proceeding for the first time with an organised and targeted effort to address a large number of faults in the water supply network, with the aim of significantly reducing drinking water losses,” he said.

He added that further interventions and projects will follow to modernise and upgrade the organisation’s water infrastructure, including the installation of smart water meters, with the aim of creating a more modern, efficient and reliable water supply network for all residents of the district. The project is being implemented under the THALEIA 2021-2027 Cohesion Policy Programme, with co-funding from the European Union.
