The billboard in Strovolos had sparked public debate, with Strovolos Municipality saying all legal procedures had been followed for its placement.

Unknown individuals painted over an ELAM billboard opposing same-sex marriage and adoption by same-sex couples, adding the word “LOL” in large orange letters.

The billboard, located on Strovolos Avenue, had already sparked strong reaction on social media over issues of freedom of expression and the content of public political messaging.

Accept Cyprus had publicly criticised the billboard and raised the matter with the Commissioners for Children’s Rights and Human Rights. The organisation noted that the sign is placed in an area close to around seven schools, frequented by children and teenagers aged between 7 and 18.

ELAM defended the billboard in television appearances and social media posts, with party members and parliamentary candidates referring to what they described as “LGBTI propaganda”.

Strovolos Municipality issued a statement in recent days saying that all legal procedures had been followed for the billboard’s installation.
