The Technical Services of the Ministry of Education invite bids for a new secondary education facility to replace a long-abandoned landmark in Larnaca.

Plans for a new high school on the grounds of the former Dianellios Technical School have advanced following the launch of a tender for consultancy and design services. The Technical Services of the Ministry of Education recently invited submissions for the comprehensive design and supervision of the new Larnaca high school, with the bidding window set to close on 3 July.

The authority established a lengthy submission period to ensure interested parties have sufficient time to prepare detailed proposals, a move aimed at preventing the subsequent timeline extensions common to complex design projects. The scope of the tender involves appointing a multidisciplinary team of consultants, comprising an architect, civil engineer, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer and quantity surveyor to undertake the design phase.

Project specifications and infrastructure

The planned educational facility will feature 18 classrooms, specialized laboratories and dedicated activity rooms. The infrastructure will also include an outdoor sports complex and a 1,400-square-metre indoor multipurpose sports hall equipped with spectator seating, changing rooms and auxiliary facilities.

The total indoor floor area of the high school is projected at approximately 6,000 square metres, with individual classrooms ranging between 60 and 65 square metres. Additionally, the Public Works Road Safety Committee has proposed external infrastructural adjustments, including new bus stops and traffic management systems, to accommodate the influx of students and staff once the school opens.

Funding and community impact

The overall cost of construction, including the preliminary design and consultancy fees, is estimated at 14.95 million euros plus VAT. The associated external roadworks are projected to require an additional 300,000 euros.

The construction of a new school on the site answers a long-standing demand by the Larnaca School Board to address the growing educational requirements of the city. The site, situated on Dimitraki Dianellou Street connecting the Sotiros and Chryso politissa parishes, has remained abandoned for approximately 12 years, prompting ongoing community complaints regarding its neglected condition at a key urban intersection.
