Cyprus is systematically advancing its public and private investments to accelerate the country's digital transition, focusing heavily on economic competitiveness, structural network resilience, and social inclusion. The strategic commitment was outlined in an official statement released by the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy on Sunday to mark World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.
Global focus on digital lifelines
Established by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the annual 17 May anniversary commemorates the founding of the organisation in 1865. The day serves to highlight the expanding role of digital technologies in modern society and the critical necessity of global connectivity. For 2026, the ITU has adopted the central theme: "Digital lifelines: Strengthening resilience in a connected world."
The Deputy Ministry noted that in a global economy increasingly dependent on uninterrupted connectivity, the structural integrity of digital networks has become fundamentally critical. These digital lifelines, which encompass terrestrial networks, submarine fiber-optic cables, satellite arrays, and centralized data systems, form the operational backbone of contemporary local communities and national economies.
Cyber security and technical infrastructure
The international anniversary serves as a direct call to action for governments, industrial sectors, and local communities to safeguard critical communication infrastructure. The objective is to engineer advanced systems capable of withstanding external shocks and recovering rapidly from disruptions, ensuring that populations remain connected during crises when communication is most vital. The ITU, alongside its global partners, is currently working to reinforce these lifelines by integrating advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and automated early warning systems.
Aligned with these international objectives, the Republic of Cyprus is accelerating its domestic digital transformation. Having already achieved 100 per cent population coverage for 5G networks, the state is now advancing the physical expansion of ultra-high-speed fiber-optic networks across the entire island. Concurrently, public initiatives are prioritizing the cultivation of digital literacy and skills to guarantee that all citizens can participate equitably in the modern digital environment. The Deputy Ministry reiterated its systematic focus on shaping a framework where secure, resilient digital technologies function as drivers of sustainable growth and social prosperity.
