A Qantas long-haul flight bound for the United States was forced to make an unscheduled emergency landing after a passenger physically assaulted and bit a cabin crew member. The mid-air incident triggered immediate intervention by fellow travellers and resulted in the perpetrator being removed from the aircraft by international law enforcement authorities.
The aircraft was operating a commercial route from Melbourne to Dallas on Friday, 15 May, when the disruption occurred over the Pacific Ocean. Due to the volatile nature of the passenger's behaviour, the flight deck initiated diversion protocols and executed an emergency landing at Papeete in French Polynesia.
Prior to the landing on the island of Tahiti, the disruptive individual was physically restrained by passengers. Upon arrival, local law enforcement authorities boarded the aircraft and took the man into custody. In response to the assault, the Australian flag carrier implemented an immediate lifetime travel ban on the individual across all Qantas Group airlines.
A Qantas spokesperson stated on Sunday, 17 May, that the safety of customers and crew remains the company's absolute priority. The airline reiterated that it maintains a policy of zero tolerance toward any disruptive, abusive, or threatening behaviour on board its flights.
