Twenty-six diplomatic missions in Cyprus issue a joint IDAHOBIT statement backing LGBTQI+ rights, inclusion and human dignity.

A coalition of diplomatic missions in Cyprus has issued a joint statement marking the 2026 International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), expressing concern over rising anti-LGBTQI+ narratives globally and reaffirming support for equality and human rights. The statement comes at a time of heightened international debate around inclusion, civic freedoms and anti-discrimination policies.

Diplomatic statement highlights global concerns

The Cyprus chapter of Diplomats for Equality (D4E) said the 2026 IDAHOBIT observance arrives at a critical moment for human rights, pointing to what it described as a resurgence of restrictive policies, disinformation campaigns and organised anti-gender narratives targeting LGBTQI+ communities and their supporters. The network said attempts to limit freedom of expression, reduce inclusive education measures and constrain civil society organisations have intensified in several regions.

The statement also expressed concern over continued restrictions and bans on Pride events in some countries, arguing that such measures undermine peaceful assembly and public visibility. According to Diplomats for Equality, Pride events remain important spaces for dialogue, solidarity and the promotion of universal rights and freedoms.

Reference to Cyprus’ international role

The diplomatic network congratulated the Republic of Cyprus on its current term as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for 2025–2027 and welcomed the government’s participation in international human rights discussions, including on gender equality and non-discrimination. The statement also referred to Cyprus’ Presidency of the Council of the European Union during the first half of 2026, expressing support for continued action on equality and inclusion initiatives.

Particular reference was made to the implementation of the EU LGBTIQ Equality Strategy and the expected adoption of Cyprus’ National Strategy on LGBTQIA+ matters, which the statement said is in its final stages.

Recognition of civil society and businesses

Diplomats for Equality praised local LGBTQI+ organisations in Cyprus for their role in advancing education, visibility and public engagement.

The organisations named in the statement include:

The statement also highlighted the role of businesses promoting inclusive workplaces and encouraged employers to adopt equality-focused human resources policies, diversity initiatives and supportive working environments.

Foreign missions participating in the initiative said they remain willing to cooperate with private sector organisations and civic groups to support inclusion efforts.

Participation in Cyprus Pride events

Diplomats for Equality said members of the network would join communities across Cyprus during Cyprus Pride Month 2026, including events in Nicosia on 17 May and 6 June.

The statement concluded with a commitment to a future in which individuals can live openly and equally regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression or sex characteristics.
