New app maps more than 130 inland swimming spots as travellers turn to quieter freshwater destinations

Portugal’s lesser‑known river beaches are becoming easier to explore with the launch of a new mobile app designed to guide visitors to inland swimming spots.

The free app, called River Beaches, maps more than 130 freshwater locations across the country, offering photographs and descriptions of each site as demand rises for alternatives to crowded coastal resorts.

Available on the Apple App Store and soon on Google Play, the app allows users to search for destinations based on specific preferences, including facilities such as parking, restaurants and restrooms, as well as safety features like lifeguards and suitability for children or pets.

It also includes tips and recommendations from visitors, helping travellers plan their experience and make better use of each location.

Rising demand

The launch comes as freshwater swimming areas gain popularity, particularly during heatwaves, with many travellers seeking quieter, nature‑based alternatives to busy seaside destinations.

Many of these river beaches are located in central Portugal, along rivers such as the Mondego, Zêzere and Alva, often surrounded by forest and mountainous landscapes.

Free access and environmental focus

The app is free to use and ad‑free, with its creators stating that 50% of profits will be directed towards river restoration and water retention projects aimed at preserving these environments.

Portugal already has a strong culture of monitoring beach conditions through digital tools, including existing apps that provide real‑time data on water quality, temperature and safety.
