The 52nd anniversary of the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus featured prominently in the Turkish press on Tuesday, with several newspapers highlighting statements by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and other senior Turkish officials made during anniversary events in the occupied areas.
A common theme across the coverage was Erdoğan's message that Turkey, as what it describes as the "motherland" and guarantor power, will continue to support Turkish Cypriots and the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
Hürriyet highlights Erdoğan's pledge
Hürriyet dedicated a significant portion of its front page to the anniversary under the headline "We Will Never Leave You Alone."
The newspaper featured Erdoğan's statement that Turkey would continue to support what he described as the legitimate cause of Turkish Cypriots. It also reported on events held in the occupied areas, accompanied by photographs from both the 1974 invasion and this year's commemorations.
Sabah focuses on support for Turkish Cypriots
The pro-government daily Sabah carried Erdoğan's message under the headline "We Will Never Leave the Turkish Cypriot People Alone".
The newspaper also highlighted comments by Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz, who said from the occupied areas that Cyprus would "never become a Greek Cypriot island."
Sabah further described the self-declared TRNC as a "red line" for Turkey and reiterated Ankara's support for the Turkish Cypriot community.
Türkgün stresses sovereignty claims
Nationalist newspaper Türkgün made the anniversary its main front-page story, carrying the headline "We Will Never Leave the TRNC Alone."
The newspaper reported that Turkey would continue supporting the self-declared TRNC and efforts aimed at securing wider international recognition.
Its coverage also reiterated Ankara's position regarding Turkish Cypriot "sovereign rights" and Turkey's role as a guarantor state.
A photograph of Turkish soldiers from 1974 appeared alongside the headline "52 Years of Peace", while the newspaper also criticised events in Greece and Cyprus marking the invasion anniversary.
Türkiye carries Erdoğan's message
Türkiye also featured Erdoğan's comments prominently, emphasising Turkey's continued backing of Turkish Cypriots and portraying the occupied areas as a strategic and national issue for Ankara.
The newspaper echoed messages about continued political, economic and diplomatic support from Turkey.
Coverage reflects official narrative
According to the report, much of the Turkish press adopted Ankara's official terminology, referring to the 1974 invasion as a "peace operation" and describing the occupied areas as the "motherland's baby homeland."
Coverage focused primarily on messages of continued Turkish support for Turkish Cypriots, while promoting Ankara's longstanding position on the Cyprus issue.
