UN Secretary-General António Guterres will meet Cypriot President Nicos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman together on two separate occasions during his upcoming visit to the island. The first will be a private dinner on the evening of Tuesday, 28 July, at the residence of his Special Representative in Cyprus, and the second a joint meeting on the morning of Wednesday, 29 July, at the offices of the Good Offices Mission in the UN-controlled area of Nicosia airport.
Guterres is due to arrive on the island on the evening of Monday, 27 July, accompanied by two Deputy Secretaries-General, Rosemary DiCarlo and Jean-Pierre Lacroix. His Personal Envoy, María Ángela Holguín, will also be on the island during the visit.
According to CNA, Guterres will meet President Christodoulides at 10.30am on Tuesday, 28 July, followed by a meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Erhürman at 11.45am. At midday he will lay a wreath at the memorial for fallen peacekeepers outside the Ledra Palace, and in the early afternoon he will visit the Committee on Missing Persons' anthropological laboratory. Later that day he will hold meetings with the negotiators and the heads of the bicommunal Technical Committees, as well as with civil society representatives. In the evening he will have a private dinner with the two leaders which, according to CNA, will not be open to media coverage.
On the morning of Wednesday, 29 July, the Secretary-General will hold a joint meeting with both leaders at the Good Offices Mission's offices at Nicosia airport, followed by a press conference, after which he will depart Cyprus with his delegation.
This will be the first visit to the island by a UN Secretary-General since February 2010, when Ban Ki-moon travelled to Cyprus and met the two leaders at the time, Demetris Christofias and Dervis Eroglu.
