Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the UN Secretary-General's ongoing initiative offers an opportunity to resolve the Cyprus problem, in a message marking the anniversary of the Turkish invasion. He said Greece remains steadfastly at the side of the Republic of Cyprus, faithful to the principles of international law and UN resolutions in pursuit of a just, workable and sustainable settlement, and stressed that any solution must remain grounded in the agreed UN framework and the European acquis.
Mitsotakis said the goal remains a reunified Cyprus, free of an occupying army and outdated guarantee systems, describing this as a modern country that would prosper within the European family and calling it the future Cyprus deserves.
Marking the fifty second anniversary of the invasion, he said the date brings to mind not only Turkey's invasion but an open wound at the heart of the Greek nation, the ongoing crime of illegal occupation, the pain of displacement and the tragedy of the missing. He honoured those who defended freedom rather than accept the outcome imposed by force of arms, and said the difficult struggle continues. "We do not forget, we remain vigilant," he said.
