United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed deep concern over the escalating situation in Venezuela, following a military action carried out by the United States, warning that the developments could have troubling consequences for the wider region.

Speaking on behalf of the secretary-general, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said Guterres was alarmed by the latest escalation, which he noted had culminated in the US military operation, stressing that such actions “may have worrying implications for the region”.

According to Dujarric, the secretary-general underlined that, regardless of the situation in Venezuela, recent developments amount to “a dangerous precedent”.

He reiterated Guterres’ consistent position on the importance of full respect, by all parties, for international law, including the Charter of the United Nations. In this context, Dujarric conveyed the secretary-general’s serious concern that the rules of international law may not have been upheld.

Guterres has called on all parties involved in Venezuela to engage in an inclusive dialogue, with full respect for human rights and the rule of law, urging efforts to prioritise de-escalation and political solutions over further confrontation.
