France will reinforce Cyprus’ defence with additional air assets and a frigate arriving on the island tonight, President Emmanuel Macron announced in a televised address. He also confirmed the deployment of the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle to the Mediterranean.

The French President stated that it is the duty of his country and his government to protect their allies. “We must stand by our allies. It is a defensive responsibility in the service of peace. We need to demonstrate solidarity. We have intercepted drones to defend the airspace of our allies and we will continue to do so for as long as necessary,” he said, announcing the reinforcement of Cyprus.

Mr Macron added that his responsibility is to protect France, noting that security measures have also been strengthened domestically. He said vigilance has been increased and that a strong presence has been deployed within the country, while referring to efforts to repatriate 400,000 French citizens currently in the wider Middle East region.
