The EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas and Cyprus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Constantinos Kombos held joint telephone consultations on Thursday with foreign ministers from the Eastern Mediterranean and the wider Middle East.

In a post on the X platform, Mr Kombos said that, in light of rapidly evolving regional developments, he and Ms Kallas “held joint contacts this evening with counterparts from the region”, stressing that “active diplomacy, engagement and dialogue are the only way forward in promoting regional stability and security”.

As part of these contacts, they spoke with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kuwait, Abdullah Ali Al Yahya, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Jordan, Ayman Safadi, and the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates, Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Further discussions were held with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Oman, Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Albusaidi, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt, Badr Abdelatty, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia, Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, and the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.

The contacts form part of broader diplomatic efforts by the European Union and Cyprus to maintain open channels of communication with key regional partners, amid heightened tensions and shifting geopolitical dynamics in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.
