Thirty-one hikers in total were trapped in the Avakas Gorge in Paphos on Wednesday after rising water levels cut off their exit route.

The Fire Service was called into action shortly after midday. According to officials, initially a call was received at 1.13pm, reporting that 26 people were stranded inside the gorge after water levels rose in the river running through it.

A crew from the Peyia Rural Fire Station responded. Using rescue ropes and lifejackets, firefighters managed to move all the hikers to a safe location. Everyone was reported to be in good health.

Later in the afternoon, at 4.20pm, a second call was received for another rescue in the same gorge, involving five people.

Once again, crews from the Peyia Rural Fire Station responded. Three individuals who were trapped in the water inside the gorge were brought to safety with the use of ropes and lifejackets. They were all in good health.

Two additional hikers, who were located in a different part of the gorge, managed to exit on their own, also unharmed.
