Parliament on Thursday approved legislation allowing the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (Cyta) to expand its activities into the energy sector, following a lengthy and at times contentious debate.

The amending bill to the Telecommunications Service Law was passed by 29 votes in favour, with two against and 14 abstentions from AKEL and independent MP Irene Charalambidou. Voting against were Limassol MP Andreas Themistocleous and DIKO MP Pavlos Mylonas.

The legislation enables Cyta to operate not only in telecommunications and technology but also in energy-related activities and associated sectors.

During the debate, MPs approved an verbal amendment proposed by DISY excluding Cyta's involvement in conventional energy production, which passed with 32 votes in favour and 14 against. Two amendments tabled by AKEL, which sought to introduce safeguards and conditions for ATHK’s new activities, were rejected.
